Homemade Hummingbird Nectar
Making your own nectar couldn’t be easier.
In a few easy steps, you can bring these nectar-loving birds to your feeder.
Materials:
1/4 cup of refined white sugar
1 cup boiling water
bowl
spoon
Important: Don’t use honey; it can promote dangerous fungal growth. Organic, natural and raw sugars contain levels of iron that could be harmful. Plain white table sugar is sucrose, which, when mixed with water, closely mimics the chemical composition of natural nectar. Also do not add red food coloring, as it is harmful to the birds.
Mix sugar and boiling water until sugar is dissolved. Cool and fill feeder. Remaining nectar can be stored in the refrigerator.
Be sure to change the liquid and clean the feeder every few days.
